  Description

There is a rapid rise of smart consumer wearable devices in recent years, from go-pros to smart watches and the burgeoning field of Augmented Reality (AR) eyewear. These new and emerging industries require batteries that are increasingly thin, lightweight, flexibly-shaped, and bendable to fit existing and future smart electronics –e.g. fitting within the wrist band of a smartwatch, or the rims of smart glasses. As a result, most require strict size volumes of below 1cm3 to fit these smaller-sized wearable gadgets. Existing smaller batteries that are flexible, do not have the energy and power densities required for sustained high performance. Many leading solutions only have energy densities of below 150Wh/L, a far cry from the ideal >240Wh/L density needed for sustained smart functionality usage. For example, the Google Glass was widely lambasted for its poor battery life, despite an official estimate battery life lasting “one day of typical use”, but rarely lasting 30 minutes when video recording. In order to power these new generation of devices, high capacity, longer duration batteries, in a variety of shapes and sizes become instrumental. 3DB’s innovative technology and materials can create smaller lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with higher power and energy densities, which are flexible mechanically and can be easily manufactured in a range of shapes and sizes. 3DB will enable longer battery life, ensuring device manufacturers premium batteries, which bend with, fit precisely, and sufficiently power smart wearable devices. For example, an Apple smartwatch lasting up to a week compared to current battery life of a matter of hours, and a Google Glass that lasts as much as an 8 hour video recording. 3DB’s advanced manufacturing technology will allow battery manufacturers to produce bespoke battery types for smart wearables, through a single installation platform, for multiple battery specification types.
